20 | WHAT’S LOVE?

FATIMA HURRIED TO light the last two scented candles in her living room before Wise came in. He had a key now and would be barging in at any second. She looked around at the effect she’d created. Only lava lamps and candles dimly lit the house. Dinner was ready, and so was dessert. Fatima was serving grilled teriyaki chicken breasts over a bed of rice pilaf, and corn. For dessert, she’d purchased a Mrs. Smith’s Dutch-apple pie and a half-gallon of vanilla ice cream. There was no shame in Fatima’s game. She enjoyed eating, and so did Wise. They ate good food and had good sex. Correction—they had great sex.

Fatima knew she had moved fast when she gave Wise a key to her condominium only two weeks into their relationship. They’d jumped in headfirst. It happened fast, but it felt right, and Fatima was known to follow her heart.

It was in her nature to treat her man well. It was the reciprocity she wasn’t used to. She couldn’t believe when Wise started offering her money for groceries and bills. And when she refused, he insisted. That did it. She was gone, and this time it seemed like it wasn’t in vain. She’d picked herself a winner.

She heard Wise’s key turn in the doorknob. He was right on time.

Wise’s entrance was loud, as usual. “Yo, Ma! Where you at?”

“I’m back here, boo.” Fatima grinned when he came in the kitchen. “Hey, baby. You hungry?”

“Nah, not yet. I got you something.” Wise threw Fatima a Ziploc bag.

She caught it and squealed with delight when she saw what it was. “Umm, I can smell it through the bag. Where you get this shit from?”

“From my man. You gon’ stop smoking all that seedy bullshit. That shit almost killed me last night. That’s blueberry, Ma. Fo’ hundred a ounce.”

She laughed. “What you know about weed? I just started you smoking, and suddenly, you’re an expert.” She examined the contents of the bag and inhaled its pungent aroma. It had a bluish hue, and the fuzzy buds looked like tiny crystal trees. And there wasn’t a seed in sight. Fatima knew weed, and this was definitely some killa. “Hell yeah, baby. This is some shit. You get two gold stars for this.”

“Twist something,” Wise urged. “Let’s try that shit out.”

“Lord, what I done did? I done turned you out. Look at you telling me to roll up. Two weeks ago, you were telling me ladies shouldn’t smoke weed.”

“If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. Fuck it.” As an afterthought, Wise added, “But if it was crack you smoked, you would’ve lost me.”

Fatima laughed but set him straight. “Nigga, the only crack I fuck with is the crack of my ass when I wash it.”

Wise shook his head and laughed. Tima’s sense of humor was part of the reason he was so attracted to her. He hated a stuck-up prissy chick.

ACROSS TOWN, LAILA and Khalil were finishing a heated argument over absolutely nothing.
